Paper is one of the most recycled products in the world and one of the few truly sustainable products. Even the energy used in its manufacture is renewable. Plus, paper actually continues to absorb carbon over the course of its life time
Even the virgin fibres that are added to the paper stream nowadays come almost entirely from sustainable forestry sources. In fact, virgin fibre is sometimes needed in the paper making process, because continuous recycling shortens and weakens paper fibres.
4 reasons we love paper
1. It’s renewable
Sustainable commercial forests have a vital role to play in curbing deforestation and mitigating climate change.
As with most agricultural crops, trees are planted in rotation. Once mature, they are harvested and new saplings are planted in the same year.
2. It’s recyclable
Did you know that recycling one tonne of paper saves;7000 gallons of water
3 cubic yards of landfill
2 barrels of crude oil
4100kw of energy.
3. It’s good for the environment
Working forests provide clean air, clean water and the managed conservation of wetlands, grasslands and biodiversity.
4. It’s versatile
Paper is categorised into three principal types – printing & writing, packaging and tissue – and chances are that we use each kind every day.
So, it's one of the oldest products and technologies in the world and as we continue to innovate and improve efficiencies in its manufacture - paper will be around for a long time to come.
